Big Bird：Surprise is what you feel,
I'm sure you recollect it.
When something happens suddenly,
And you did not expect it.
And things that make you feel surprised,
We like to call...
Surprises!
So here's a little song.
It isn't very long.
To help you realize what a surprise is!
Bob: Surprise...
Maria: Surprise...
Gordon: Surprise...
Boy: Surprise!
(Music gets faster as Maria is hit in the face with a pie)
All: It happens in an instant,
You can't believe your eyes.
Just suddenly a start at stand you hardly recognize.
David: Surprise...
Bob: Surprise!
Stuie Monster: Surprise!
David and Bob: AH!
Maria: Surprises go so quickly,
You don't know where you're at.
You're dressing to go out,
And there's a rabbit in your hat?!
(Bob throws a pie in the rabbit's face)
(Scene changes to show Gordon shopping.)
Gordon: You're shopping in the market,
When suddenly you start.
The groceries are moving,
There's a monster in your cart!
(Drum solo; scene changes to show David hanging laundry.)
Bob: You're hanging out the washing,
'Cause the weather's fine.
And suddenly, you see that
Something else is on the line!
Grover: I don't know how I got here,
This isn't very wise.
I can't hold on much longer,
I'm in for a... (loses his grip and yells as he falls)
SURPRIIIIIISSSSSSEEEEE!
It happens in an instant,
You can't believe your eyes.
You're suddenly is standing on
It's how you recognize...
Surprise!
Big Bird: Surprise!
(Pause)
Grover: SURPRIIIIIISSSSSSEEEEE!! (falls)
(Scene changes to show Bob, wearing an old-fashioned boy's costume with straw hat.)
Bob (speaking): Jack and Jill went up the hill
To fetch a pail of water...
(A lot of water splashes on him.)
All: SURPRISE!
(Scene changes to show Mr. Hooper in disguise before a door.)
Mr. Hooper: You open up the door,
You walk into the hall,
Instead of walking to the hall,
You walk into a wall!
(Bangs his face on the wall)
Wall: Surprise.
(Throws a pie at the wall)
(Scene changes to Gordon at a window.)
Gordon: You're looking out a window,
You see who's on the town.
You find that someone's looking in,
Who's hanging upside down!
Grover: Surprise!
(Screams as he falls)
(Scene changes to show Maria at a bakery with a baker.)

Maria: You go to see a baker,
He's making custard pies.
You ask if you can have one, and the baker yells:
Baker (holds up a pie): Surprise! (Ready to throw it in her face)
Maria (holds up another pie and throws it in his face first): Surprise!
Bob: Surprise!
Mr. Hooper: Surprise!
(Both hold up pies, but Maria ducks and they pie each other instead)
Maria: Surprise.
Mr. Hooper and Bob: Surprise, surprise, surprise!
(Scene changes to show Bob, wearing Jack and Jill costume.)
Bob (speaking): Mary had a little lamb,
Its fleece was white as snow.
(A bunch of snow dumps on him.)
All: SURPRISE!
(Scene changes to show Gordon at the mailbox.)
Gordon: You want to send a letter
To your Uncle Clyde.
You open up the mailbox,
And there's somebody inside.
(Voice in mailbox screams)
(Scene changes to show Bob in ordinary outfit, at Oscar's can.)
Bob (singing): You go to visit Oscar,
You knock upon his tin.
The lid goes up and someone says:
(Knocks, lid opens to reveal Maria in a devil costume)
Maria (speaking demonically): Oscar isn't in!
(Scene changes to Maria dressed as a baker.)
Maria: You start to carve a chicken,
And it raises in the air!
(Shows David as a dog-walker.)
David: You meet a man who walks a dog,
A dog who isn't there!
(Shows the humans in various disguises, Bob as a policeman, David as a clown, Gordon as a farmer, Maria as a sailor.)
Bob: So there are some surprises,
David: They often wear disguises,
Gordon: They can make funny faces,
Maria: Or even custard piers. (gets hit with a pie)
All: And like they are the spice,
They seldom have it twice, (Maria is hit again)
And there are times when nothing you can think of is at times...!!
Bob: As a surprise is... (Maria pies him)
(Scene changes to show Big Bird, sadly walking down Sesame Street.)
Big Bird: One day, you have a birthday,
You're feeling kind of rotten,
'Cause all your friends and relatives
Appear to have forgotten.
You're feeling sad and lonely,
When right before your eyes,
There's suddenly a birthday cake, and people yell...
All: SURPRISE!
David: Surprise!
Maria: Surprise!
Gordon: We knew it was your birthday
Mr. Hooper (holding up a sweater): I hope this is your size.
Bob: A lot more people care about you than you realize.
Grover: (pops out of the cake) Surprise!
(Mr. Hooper gets pied)
All: Surprise!
(Then Bob)
All: Surprise!
(Then Gordon)
All: Surprise!
(Then Maria)
Maria: Disguise.
(She gets hit again)
All: SURPRISE!!!
(Song ends with Big Bird's pie flying up and splatting the camera.)
